Cinema ticketing software for German cinemas

The best cinema ticketing software for a German cinema that wants to own its audience is Filmgrail on top of the box office you already run. Keep COMPESO, cinetixx or your current Kinokasse at the counter and replace the booking widget with your own branded website, native iOS and Android apps and checkout, at a flat price per screen with no per-ticket fees.

Cinema software in Germany: what cinemas run today

Germany is the one market where our crawl gives a clear picture. Of 249 active German cinema websites, 133 linked to Kinoheld, 71 to cinetixx and 21 to COMPESO. Most German cinemas sell online through a widget or portal that sits on top of the till.

What that means for a German cinema

The typical German independent sells online through a widget on its own site and a listing on a consumer portal. That is cheap, and for a cinema that only wants online sales at no fixed cost it is a rational choice. It is also someone else's product with your programme in it: the portal is built to help a moviegoer choose where to go, which means it can show your customer the cinema down the road.

Filmgrail is the other trade. Your own website and native app sell only your programme, every visitor and every customer record is yours, and loyalty and push bring regulars back without a portal in between. The till does not move: Filmgrail reads programme, sessions, seats and prices from the box office and writes each sale back. Proof: who runs on Filmgrail

We will be straight with you: we do not yet have a German cinema live. The closest comparables are the cinemas German Programmkinos and kommunale Kinos resemble most. In Norway, Trondheim Kino, owned by the municipality since 1918, runs 19 halls on Filmgrail with its own apps, and Bergen Kino runs 18. In Sweden, Bio Bristol is an association-run quality film cinema, much like a German Filmkunsttheater, with website and ticketing on Filmgrail. In the US, Classic Cinemas runs around sixteen theatres, from restored single screens to multiplexes.

Festivals are the other proof point: BIFF and the Norwegian International Film Festival run on our festival platform. The first German cinemas get our full attention during setup.

Why German cinemas choose Filmgrail

German audiences compare your website with the multiplex app and with streaming, not with other independents. Filmgrail gives a Programmkino, a family-run cinema or a regional group the same kind of digital front door, in German and any other language you need.

Your brand, not a shared booking page

Your own website on your own domain, with a proper page for every film, your events and series, and a checkout in your colours. Not a portal or widget that looks the same for every cinema on it, and that can show your customer the cinema down the road.

Native iOS and Android apps included

Your cinema on the moviegoer's home screen, running on the same CMS as the website, with push when a saved film goes on sale. Most cinemas have no app at all; in our crawl of 1,189 cinema websites only 7% linked to one.

Flat price, no per-ticket fees

From $200 to $20,000 a year, flat per screen. Our price does not rise with your attendance, so a sold-out weekend costs you nothing extra.

Your box office stays

Filmgrail reads films, sessions, seats and prices from the box office you already run and writes each sale back. No counter migration, no retraining, no change to your reporting.

Live in weeks

A few weeks when we already integrate your box office and payment provider; about a month when we connect a new one.

Local payments, loyalty and Insights

German moviegoers expect PayPal, cards, Klarna, Apple Pay and Google Pay; Kinoheld lists PayPal, Amazon Pay, Google Pay, credit card, Klarna direct debit and Sofort for its checkout. We integrate your payment provider rather than forcing ours on you, with GDPR-compliant customer data.

The German market

Germany is one of Europe's largest cinema markets: €924 million in box office and 91.9 million admissions in 2025, up 6.4% and 2.1%, according to UNIC figures in our European cinema statistics. The circuits have their own apps and loyalty: CineStar runs 339 screens on 43 sites, CinemaxX 257 on 30 and UCI Kinowelt 188 on 21 (see the largest cinema chains).

Exhibitors meet at CineHamburg, from HDF KINO, and independents at the Filmkunstmesse Leipzig of AG Kino. We list 17 cinema industry events in Germany, and the leadership of HDF KINO, AG Kino and the circuits is in our who's who in cinema.

Pricing and setup

Pricing is published and flat: from $200 a year for a single screen to $20,000 a year for a large circuit, per screen, with no per-ticket fees (see pricing). A mid-size film festival pays about $5,000 a year. If we already integrate your box office and payment provider you can be live in a few weeks; a provider we have not connected before takes about a month.

Answers

Frequently asked questions

What is the best cinema ticketing software in Germany?

For a cinema that wants its own brand and customers online, Filmgrail. Keep COMPESO, cinetixx or your current Kinokasse and put Filmgrail's branded website, native iOS and Android apps and checkout on top, at a flat price per screen with no per-ticket fees. If you only want a booking widget at no fixed cost, Kinoheld is the common choice in Germany.

Does Filmgrail work with COMPESO?

Yes. Filmgrail is integrated with COMPESO. It reads programme, sessions, seating and pricing and writes each completed order back, so reporting stays in COMPESO. With an existing integration you can be live in a few weeks.

Does Filmgrail work with cinetixx?

cinetixx is not on our published integration list today. cinetixx describes an API-first architecture, and we connect a new box office in about a month, scoped in writing before you commit.

Can we replace Kinoheld with Filmgrail?

Yes. Kinoheld is an online sales widget and portal on top of your POS; Filmgrail is a branded website, native app and checkout on top of the same POS. Switching gives you your own customer relationship and your own data.

Is the website and app available in German?

Yes. The platform is multilingual, so a cinema can run its site and apps in German, English or both with a language switch. Customer data is handled under GDPR.

How much does Filmgrail cost for a German cinema?

From $200 a year for a single screen to $20,000 a year for a large circuit, flat per screen, with no per-ticket fees. Prices are set in US dollars. A mid-size film festival pays about $5,000 a year.
