The world's biggest movie theater circuits ranked by number of screens, with sites and countries operated. Figures come from annual reports, exchange filings and company announcements — each dated, because circuits open, close and change hands every quarter.

Cinépolis's figure ('over 6,837 screens in 18 countries') comes from a supplier's January 2026 press release quoting the company, because its own sites could not be read. Wanda Film has renamed itself Ruyi Film; its figure includes HOYTS, which also appears separately. EVT's figure includes managed and joint-venture sites. Hengdian and Jinyi are directly operated sites only.

What the ranking hides

Screen count measures size, not health. Several circuits near the top of this table have been through restructurings since 2020, and this year alone iPic filed for bankruptcy, Kinepolis bought Emagine and agreed to buy Showcase's US cinemas, and Cineplex opened a strategic review — see the closures and openings tracker.

It also hides how concentrated the business is. Outside China, a handful of groups operate a large share of all screens in their home markets, which is why a single circuit's booking decisions can make or break a film's opening weekend, and why independents compete on programme and experience rather than on scale. What independents run on is measured in our cinema website technology report.

How this was compiled

Each circuit's screens, sites and countries were taken from the most recent primary source we could read: half-year or annual filings where the company is listed, otherwise the company's own site or press release. Wikipedia was used only to find those sources, never cited. Where sources disagreed, the more recent primary figure was used and the conflict noted. Screen totals for Lotte Cinema, Aeon Cinema, Harkins, Landmark, Alamo Drafthouse, Showcase, Omniplex, Village and Reel are not published and are left blank rather than estimated.
