The largest cinema chain in the world is AMC Entertainment, with 9,530 screens at 845 theatres in 11 countries at 30 June 2026. It is also the biggest by revenue ($4.85bn in 2025) and by tickets sold (219 million). This page ranks the biggest movie theater chains by screens, revenue and attendance, names the largest circuit in each major market and the biggest single cinemas, and dates every figure to the filing or company statement it comes from, because circuits open, close and change hands every quarter.

Largest cinema chain in the world: the short answer

AMC Entertainment is the largest cinema chain in the world. It operated 9,530 screens at 845 theatres in 11 countries at 30 June 2026 [1], and it describes itself in its annual report as the world's largest theatrical exhibition company [2]. About 6,958 of those screens are AMC Theatres in the US; the other 2,572 are Odeon Cinemas Group in Europe.

The rest of the top five biggest movie theater chains are Regal Global Entertainment (7,648 screens, the former Cineworld group) [3], Cinépolis of Mexico (6,837) [56], Wanda Film of China, now Ruyi Film (6,706 including Australia's HOYTS) [7], and Cinemark (5,618 at 30 September 2026) [53]. Those five run about 36,300 screens between them, or 16.5% of the 219,954 screens in the world in 2025 [77].

The order depends on what you count. By revenue and by tickets sold AMC still leads, but Cinemark is a clear second and Wanda third; Regal and Cinépolis are private and publish neither. Cinépolis's figure (6,837 screens at 889 theatres in 18 countries) comes from supplier press releases quoting the company, because its own sites could not be read. Wanda Film has renamed itself Ruyi Film; its figure includes HOYTS, which also appears separately. Kinepolis now includes Emagine (from 11 February 2026) and 13 Showcase cinemas in the US (from 11 September 2026). PVR INOX's 1,797 screens include 9 in Sri Lanka and 71 at managed properties; its September 2026 update gives no site count. Marcus counts 961 owned and 14 managed screens. EVT's figure includes managed and joint-venture sites. Hengdian and Jinyi are directly operated sites only. AMC and Cineplex publish third-quarter figures in November; the June figures stand until then.

What the giants' numbers mean for an independent cinema

Divide the published figures and you get benchmarks an operator can use. AMC sold 219.4 million tickets in 2025 across an average of 9,375 screens [2]. That is about 23,400 admissions per screen per year, or 64 a day. Its total revenue of $4,848.9m works out at $22.10 per admission, counting tickets, food and drink, advertising and other income together.

The same sum for the others: Cinemark $16.14 (pulled down by lower Latin American prices), Cineplex C$30.46 (about $21.79, and it includes its media and entertainment venues), Kinepolis €18.40 (about $20.77) and Vue £11.18 (about $14.73). The spread is mostly ticket price and how much each audience spends at the counter, which is why every large circuit is pushing premium large formats and food.

Worked example. A five-screen independent selling 100,000 tickets a year sells 20,000 per screen, about 85% of AMC's rate (20,000 ÷ 23,400). If its average revenue per visitor is $16, it takes $1.6m a year; at AMC's $22.10 the same audience would bring in $2.21m. Closing even a third of that $6.10 gap per head, about $2, adds $200,000 a year. That gap is where spend per head, online booking and loyalty sit, and it is the part of the giants' playbook an independent can copy without their scale. Scale also brings costs a small cinema does not carry. The big chains build and run their own apps and loyalty programmes with in-house teams. An independent buys the same tools from a vendor; Filmgrail, for example, charges a flat price per screen with no per-ticket fees.

The biggest movie theaters in the world

Ask for the biggest movie theater, or the largest cinema theatre in the world, and the answer depends on what you measure: seats, screens or screen size. Each has a different holder. These are the records we could verify; we left out claims that only appear on travel and listicle sites.

  • Most seats in one complex: Kinepolis Madrid (Ciudad de la Imagen, Spain). Guinness World Records lists it as the largest cinema complex, with 9,200 seats across 25 screens, each seating between 211 and 996 people. It opened on 17 September 1998 [63].
  • Most seats in one cinema hall: Radio City Music Hall, New York. Guinness lists it as the largest cinema by seat capacity: 5,945 seats when it opened on 27 December 1932, now 5,910 [64].
  • Largest permanent cinema screen: IMAX at Traumpalast Leonberg, Germany. 38.80 m × 21.00 m, or 814.8 m², verified by Guinness on 6 December 2022 [65].
  • Most screens at one site: 30. No single cinema holds this alone. Several AMC sites in the US run 30 screens, including AMC Ontario Mills 30 in California, and Cinema City Glilot in Israel does too, according to the Cinema Treasures directory [66]. We found no Guinness entry for this category.

For context, the average AMC theatre has about 11 screens and the average Cinema XXI site about 5 (see the screens-per-site chart above). A multiplex of 25 or 30 screens is an outlier even for the biggest chains.

Guinness records can change; check the linked entry before quoting. The 30-screen entry comes from a cinema directory, not a record body, and the Ontario Mills opening year is from that directory.

How the largest cinema chains got so big

Today's top five are mostly the product of a decade of takeovers. The pattern is the same each time: a buyer pays for scale to get better film terms, bigger advertising sales and lower costs per screen, often with borrowed money, and then has to carry that debt through bad years.

AMC built its European arm in 2016–17, buying Odeon and UCI for $637m in cash and shares and US rival Carmike for $858m, then Nordic Cinema Group for about SEK 5.6bn ($631m) [67]. At the time AMC was a subsidiary of China's Dalian Wanda Group. Cineworld answered by agreeing to buy Regal in December 2017 for $23 a share, a $5.9bn deal including debt [68], and in December 2019 agreed to buy Canada's Cineplex for C$2.8bn including debt [69].

The pandemic broke that strategy. Cineworld walked away from Cineplex in 2020, and an Ontario court ordered it to pay C$1.24bn in damages in December 2021 [70]. Cineworld filed for Chapter 11 in September 2022 [71] and emerged in July 2023 owned by its lenders [72]; the group now trades as Regal Global Entertainment. In India, PVR and INOX merged in 2023 after tribunal approval in January [73], creating the country's largest circuit.

The most active buyer since has been Kinepolis. It completed the purchase of US chain Emagine (14 cinemas, 177 screens) on 11 February 2026 [25], and of 13 Showcase cinemas from Harbor Lights Entertainment, formerly National Amusements, on 11 September 2026, at an enterprise value of $30m [74][55]. What the ranking hides

Screen count measures size, not health. Several circuits near the top of this table have been through restructurings since 2020, and this year alone iPic filed for bankruptcy, Kinepolis bought Emagine and Showcase's US cinemas, and Cineplex opened a strategic review — see the closures and openings tracker.

It also hides how concentrated the business is. Outside China, a handful of groups operate a large share of all screens in their home markets, which is why a single circuit's booking decisions can make or break a film's opening weekend, and why independents compete on programme and experience rather than on scale. How this was compiled: sources and method

Each circuit's screens, sites and countries were taken from the most recent primary source we could read: quarterly, half-year or annual filings where the company is listed, otherwise the company's own site or press release. Wikipedia was used only to find those sources, never cited. Where sources disagreed, the more recent primary figure was used and the conflict noted. Screen totals for Lotte Cinema, Aeon Cinema, Harkins, Landmark, Alamo Drafthouse, Omniplex, Village and Reel are not published and are left blank rather than estimated.
