Average cinema ticket price by country

What a cinema ticket costs on average in 22 countries, the European Union and Europe as a whole, in local currency and US dollars. Each figure is box office divided by admissions for the latest year, from the national film agency, statistics office or trade body. Where we did the division ourselves, the row says so.

The headline

  • Switzerland has the most expensive cinema tickets of the 22 markets here: CHF 16.39 on average in 2025, about $19.77 [16] [2]. The Nordic countries follow, between $13.78 (Norway) and $15.51 (Denmark).
  • The US average was $11.31 in 2025 [3], close to Germany's €10.05 ($11.36) [6] and Australia's A$17.90 ($11.54) [17].
  • The UK averaged £8.01, from £989.5 million of box office on 123.5 million admissions [4]. That is about $10.57.
  • Europe as a whole averaged about €7.90 ($8.93): €6.88 billion of box office on 870.2 million admissions across 39 territories [1]. France, the largest market by admissions, sits below that at €7.42 [5].
  • The cheapest markets in the list are China (CNY 41.87, $5.83) and Poland (PLN 22.44, $5.98) [20] [1].

Each figure is box office divided by admissions for the latest full year. Where the national body publishes the average itself, that figure is used. Where it publishes only the two totals, we did the division and the row says "derived". Every conversion to US dollars uses the ECB's annual average reference rates for the same year [2].

Multiplexes charge more than small cinemas

Three national bodies split the average by type of cinema. The gap inside one country is often larger than the gap between countries.

CountrySmaller cinemasMultiplexesNational average
France (2025)€4.94 single-screen; €5.89 two or three screens€8.34 all multiplexes; €8.60 twelve screens or more€7.42

Switzerland (2025)CHF 14.12 single-screen; CHF 15.76 two to seven screensCHF 17.87 eight screens or moreCHF 16.39

Sources: CNC Bilan 2025, chapter 2.1; FFA Kinoergebnisse nach Kinoform 2025; BFS, average admission price by cinema type. Sweden's SFI gives a different split: SEK 120 for Swedish films against SEK 143 overall, because the biggest Swedish titles of 2025 were children's films.

Why the numbers are not quite comparable

All of these are averages of what cinemas actually took per admission, not list prices. That makes them useful, but several things differ between countries.

  • VAT and ticket taxes. France and Germany publish their averages including VAT [5] [6]. Statistics Denmark publishes box office excluding VAT [15], which is why we show the VAT-inclusive UNIC figure in the chart and the DST figure in the notes. VAT rates on cinema tickets also differ, so part of any gap between two countries is tax, not price.
  • Subscriptions. Unlimited cards pull the average down. France's CNC counts admissions made on unlimited passes, such as UGC Illimité, and values them at a reference price [5]. The other sources used here do not say how they treat Pathé's CinéPass, AMC Stubs A-List or similar schemes, so a market with heavy subscription use may look cheaper than its box office prices.
  • Premium formats. IMAX, 3D, recliner and VIP seats raise the average without any change to standard prices. CNC attributes the higher average for American films in France partly to 3D and premium-screen showings of Avatar: Fire and Ash [5], and SFI names VIP rooms and IMAX as the expensive end of the Swedish range [12].
  • Discounts and children. A strong year for family films lowers the average. Sweden's average for Swedish films fell to SEK 120 in 2025 for that reason [12].
  • What counts as an admission. Free tickets are left out in France and Denmark [5] [15]. Australia's admissions are themselves estimated from the average price [17]. Germany's 2025 total includes drive-ins, open-air screenings and festivals [8].
  • Exchange rates. The dollar ranking moves with exchange rates from year to year. Compare the local-currency change over time, not the dollar ranking, when you want to know whether a market is getting more expensive.

What operators can take from this

National averages are a sense check, not a price list. Inside one country the spread between a single-screen town cinema and a city multiplex is wider than the spread between most of the countries above. Set prices against your own competition, rooms and dayparts, and track your own average ticket price by screen and showtime rather than one site-wide number.

If you want ticket prices you can change by showtime, format and seat type without a developer, that is what our cinema ticketing software does.
