Cinema ticketing software for New Zealand cinemas

The best cinema ticketing software for most New Zealand cinemas is Filmgrail on top of the box office you already run. Keep Vista or Veezi at the counter, and let Filmgrail run your branded website, native iOS and Android apps and online checkout, at a flat price per screen with no per-ticket fees.

Cinema software in New Zealand: what cinemas run today

New Zealand is home to Vista Group, which describes itself as the global leader in cinema software, and to Shift72's festival streaming. Our crawl did not collect enough New Zealand sites for a country breakdown, so this table uses what each vendor states on its own website.

What that means for a New Zealand cinema

A New Zealand cinema on Vista or Veezi is running the same operational software as circuits around the world, and there is no reason to move it. The part that is rarely world-class is what the audience sees: a standard web sales page, no app, and no way to recognise your regulars before they buy.

Filmgrail is the moviegoer layer on top. We read films, sessions, seat maps and prices from Vista or Veezi and write each sale back, so the counter and your reports stay as they are. Read Vista alternatives, Vista vs Veezi and Veezi alternatives for the detail.

Why New Zealand cinemas choose Filmgrail

New Zealand independents compete with circuits that have national apps and loyalty schemes. Filmgrail gives a town cinema or a boutique circuit its own branded website and app, on top of the Vista software it already trusts.

Your brand, not a shared booking page

Your own website on your own domain, with a proper page for every film, your seasons and events, and a checkout in your colours. Not a generic ticketing page that looks the same for every venue on the system.

Native iOS and Android apps included

Your cinema on the moviegoer's home screen, running on the same CMS as the website, with push when a saved film goes on sale. Most cinemas have no app at all; in our crawl only 7% of cinema websites linked to one.

Flat price, no per-ticket fees

From $200 to $20,000 a year, flat per screen. Our price does not rise with your attendance, so a sold-out weekend costs you nothing extra.

Your box office stays

Filmgrail reads films, sessions, seats and prices from the box office you already run and writes each sale back. No counter migration, no retraining, no change to your reporting.

Live in weeks

A few weeks when we already integrate your box office and payment provider; about a month when we connect a new one.

Loyalty, push and Insights built in

Member pricing, push campaigns and audience analytics in the same customer record as the sale, plus a planning tool for your programme and a festival platform if you run one.

The New Zealand market

New Zealand is a small market with big-circuit competition: HOYTS, one of the two Australian-headquartered circuits in our largest cinema chains ranking, operates 500 screens across Australia and New Zealand. Our box office research does not yet publish a separate New Zealand figure, so we will not quote one.

New Zealanders pay by EFTPOS at the counter and by card, Apple Pay or Google Pay online. We integrate your payment provider rather than forcing ours on you.

The industry meets at the New Zealand Motion Picture Industry Council's conference in Auckland, and Vista Group holds VistaCon in Auckland too; both are in our cinema industry events calendar.

Proof: who runs on Filmgrail

We do not yet have a New Zealand cinema live. The closest comparable is across the Tasman: Wallis Cinemas, family-owned for over seventy years in South Australia and at Mildura in Victoria, runs its website, online ticketing and CMS on Filmgrail while using Vista's Oneview analytics. That is the model for a New Zealand cinema: Vista in the back office, Filmgrail in front of the audience.

Filmgrail also runs Classic Cinemas in the US, Ster-Kinekor in South Africa and a long list of town cinemas in Norway, many of them the size of a New Zealand regional cinema.

$200–$20,000
a year, flat per screen

Published pricing in US dollars, from a single screen to a large circuit.

$0
per-ticket fees

We never take a cut of your tickets. Every online sale costs the same as the last.

Weeks
to go live

A few weeks if we already integrate your box office and payment provider; about a month for a new one.

~$5,000
a year for a mid-size festival

The same flat logic for festivals: website, apps, passes and ticketing, no per-ticket fee.

Pricing and setup

Pricing is published and flat: from $200 a year for a single screen to $20,000 a year for a large circuit, per screen, with no per-ticket fees (see pricing). A mid-size film festival pays about $5,000 a year. If we already integrate your box office and payment provider you can be live in a few weeks; a provider we have not connected before takes about a month.

See your own cinema on it before you talk to anyone: the free cinema website prototype builds a version of your site from its current address. Then book a demo against your real programme.
