Cinema opening and closing checklist
One checklist for opening the cinema and one for closing it, split by box office, concessions, projection, auditoria and the building, with a tick column for each day of the week and a sign-off row. A cash-up tab checks the drawer and card terminal against your POS. Edit it to fit your site, or print the PDF.
What is in the checklist
| Area | Opening | Closing |
|---|---|---|
| Box office | Terminals and business date, float, sessions and prices, online sales, printers | Shifts closed, drawers counted, cash secured, card batch, tomorrow on sale |
| Concessions | Equipment, fridge temperatures, stock and dates, allergen information | Equipment cleaned, waste recorded, stock count, food stored or discarded |
| Projection / booth | TMS alarms, KDMs for every show, DCP ingest, playlists, lamp or laser status, sound check | TMS logs, failed shows noted, tomorrow's KDMs, projectors to standby |
| Auditoria | Lights, exits, seats, wheelchair spaces, accessibility devices | Walk-through, lost property, seats up, devices on charge |
| Building | Fire panel, first aid, toilets, team briefing | Public areas clear, doors secured, logs, alarm set |
| Cash-up | Float, cash and card against POS figures, variances per day and for the week | |

The spreadsheet has Y / N / N/A columns for each day of the week, a daily count, sign-off rows and the cash-up tab. The PDF is the same two checklists ready to print on A4 or Letter.

What is in the checklist
- Box office: terminals and business date, opening float, today's sessions and prices, online sales, card terminals and printers, ratings displayed. At close: shifts closed, drawers counted, cash secured, card batch closed, tomorrow on sale.
- Concessions: equipment, fridge and freezer temperatures, stock and date labels, allergen information. At close: cleaning, waste, stock count, food stored or discarded.
- Projection and booth: TMS alarms, a KDM for every show that covers the last one, DCP ingest, show playlists with the right ads, trailers, format and audio, schedules that match what is on sale, lamp hours or laser status, a test clip for lens and masking, and a sound check. At close: TMS logs, failed shows noted, tomorrow's keys checked, projectors to standby.
- Auditoria: house, step and aisle lights, exit signs and routes, seats and recliners, wheelchair spaces, and assistive listening, captioning and audio description devices.
- Building and team: fire panel, first aid, toilets, team briefing. At close: public areas clear, doors secured, logs completed, alarm set.
- Cash-up: float, cash counted, card terminal total and the POS figures for both, with variances per day and for the week.
The safety items are general good practice, not a statement of what the law requires where you are. Fire, food-safety, licensing and accessibility rules differ by country and local authority, so add their specific requirements and your insurer's.
How to use it
Enter the site and the week commencing date, then rewrite the tasks to match your building and equipment. Keep one task per row so the daily count stays right. Each day, mark every task Y, N or N/A; the Done row counts what was completed out of the tasks that apply. Anything marked N goes in the notes with what was done about it, and the duty manager signs off the day.
The spreadsheet fits each checklist on one landscape page when printed. If you prefer paper on a clipboard, the PDF has the same opening and closing lists with blank tick boxes.
For the booth items, the free KDM checker reads a key's validity window, and the accessibility device calculator estimates how many listening and captioning devices to keep charged.

Frequently asked questions
What should a cinema opening checklist include?
At least the box office and its float, online sales for the day, concessions equipment and food safety, the booth (TMS alarms, KDMs for every show, DCPs ingested, playlists and schedules, light source status and a sound check), each auditorium's lights, exits, seats and accessibility devices, and building safety checks. Add whatever your local rules and insurer require.
What does a cinema closing checklist cover?
Closing the POS and counting the cash, securing it, reconciling the card terminal, checking tomorrow's sessions are on sale, cleaning and storing concessions, checking the TMS logs and tomorrow's keys, walking every auditorium for people and lost property, charging accessibility devices, and securing the building.
Why check KDMs every morning?
An encrypted feature will not play without a valid key for that screen's server, and a key has a start and end time. Checking at opening that every show today has a key whose window covers the last show leaves time to request a replacement before the audience arrives.
Is there a printable version?
Yes. The PDF has the opening and closing checklists on one landscape page each with blank tick boxes for every day of the week. The spreadsheet prints the same way if you edit the tasks first.
