Movie and showtime schema generator
Structured data is the cheapest thing on any cinema SEO list and the most commonly skipped. This produces valid Movie and ScreeningEvent JSON-LD for one film page, including showtimes, venue, price and subtitle language.
The film
The screenings
Generated JSON-LD
—
Paste this into the <head> of the film's own page, not your home page. One block per film. Then check it in Google's Rich Results Test and the Schema.org validator before you ship it.
Everything here runs in your own browser. No values are sent to us, nothing is stored, and there is no sign-up.
What this markup does and does not do
It tells search engines and answer engines, unambiguously, what the page is about: which film, how long, who directed it, what certificate, and which screenings exist at which venue at which times and prices.
What it does not do is put your showtimes into Google's showtimes panel. Those come from ticketing aggregators with commercial relationships, not from an individual cinema's markup, and any agency telling you otherwise is selling you something. What markup does affect is how well your own film pages are understood, matched and cited, which is a different and still worthwhile prize.
Getting it right
- One block per film page. Do not put every film on the home page. The markup has to describe the page it sits on.
- Use a stable @id for the film. The generator derives one from the booking URL so that every ScreeningEvent references the same Movie rather than duplicating it.
- Get the UTC offset right. A start time without a correct offset is worse than no start time, because it is confidently wrong.
- Keep it in sync. Markup describing screenings that have been cancelled or moved is a liability. If you cannot automate it, generate it less often and check it more.
- Validate before shipping. Google's Rich Results Test and the Schema.org validator, every time. They disagree occasionally and both are worth passing.
If you are doing this by hand, something is wrong
A cinema with forty screenings a week cannot maintain this manually, and a stale markup block is worse than none. This tool is for getting one page right, understanding the shape, and handing that shape to whoever builds your site.
In a properly built cinema site the markup is generated from the same programme data that renders the page, so it cannot drift. That is how it works on the sites we build, and it is the right answer regardless of who builds yours.
Frequently asked questions
Will this put my showtimes in Google's showtimes box?
No. Google sources showtimes from ticketing aggregators rather than from a cinema's own markup. What this improves is how your own film pages are understood and cited, which is a real but different benefit.
Where do I put the generated code?
In the head of the individual film's page, one block per film. Not on the home page and not on the programme index.
Do I need both Movie and ScreeningEvent?
Yes. Movie describes the film, ScreeningEvent describes a specific performance at a specific place and time. The generator links the events to a single movie by @id so the film is not duplicated.
What about subtitles and accessibility?
Subtitle language is included when you set it. Accessibility attributes vary enough by market that they are better handled in the page's own content than guessed at in generated markup.
Is anything I type sent to Filmgrail?
No. The generator runs entirely in your browser.
