Cinema business plan template
The financial model behind a cinema business plan, as a spreadsheet you fill with your own numbers. It builds admissions two ways, from the catchment and from seats, runs the first twelve months with seasonality and ramp-up, and works out break-even, margin of safety and a downside case.
What is in the file
| Tab | What it does |
|---|---|
| Inputs | Site and programming, admissions from the catchment, revenue per admission, variable and fixed costs, funding and loan, capital costs. Public benchmarks noted beside the inputs, with sources |
| Monthly P&L | First 12 months with seasonality and ramp-up: revenue, costs, profit and cash |
| Break-even | Break-even admissions, the capacity and catchment forecasts side by side, and a downside case |
| Notes & sources | How to read the model, an appendix checklist for the written plan, and sources |

What is in the template
- Inputs: site and programming, admissions from the catchment, ticket price and concession spend net of tax, film rental and other variable costs, fixed monthly costs, funding and loan, and a full list of one-off capital costs from fit-out and projection to launch marketing and a working-capital reserve. Public benchmarks sit beside some inputs with their sources, as context rather than targets.
- Monthly P&L: the first twelve months with a seasonality weight and a ramp-up percentage per month, through to profit and cash.
- Break-even: admissions needed per month, per day and per show, break-even occupancy, the capacity and catchment forecasts side by side, margin of safety and a downside case.
- Notes and sources: how to read the model and an appendix checklist for the written plan.
The inputs are also available as a CSV if you want to bring them into another tool.
How to use it
Read how to write a cinema business plan first. A lender will judge the plan on four numbers: admissions, average ticket price, spend per head and the film rental rate. Because they multiply, one optimistic figure turns the model into fiction, so the template builds admissions from the catchment and checks them against the seats you have.
Fill every yellow input in your own currency. When the catchment forecast implies an occupancy far above what similar cinemas achieve, trust the lower number. For the capital cost lines, how much it costs to open a movie theater sets out what each line covers and which get forgotten.
Once the plan is funded and open, the movie theater profit calculator runs the same logic on a whole year with published benchmarks, so you can test one lever at a time.
Frequently asked questions
What should a cinema business plan include?
A defensible admissions forecast, ticket price and concession spend net of tax, the film rental rate, fixed operating costs, the full capital cost of opening including a contingency and working capital, how it is funded, a monthly P&L and cash flow for the first year, and break-even with a downside case. The written plan explains and defends those numbers.
How does the template forecast admissions?
Two ways. From the catchment: population within a realistic travel time, national admissions per person, less what competing cinemas already take, times your share. From capacity: seats, shows and occupancy. Comparing the two shows whether the forecast is plausible.
Are there numbers already filled in?
No. Every input is blank for your own figures. Where a public benchmark exists it is noted beside the input with its source, as context rather than a target.
Is it really free?
Yes. Download the Excel file directly; there is no sign-up and no email wall.
