Cinema screen size calculator
How big can the screen be, and will it look big enough from the back row? Enter the wall you have and where the first and last rows sit. The calculator gives the scope and flat picture sizes for constant-height or constant-width masking, the viewing angle from both rows, and how big each pixel is on the screen.

How the sizes are worked out
Cinema pictures come in two shapes: scope, 2.39:1, and flat, 1.85:1 (see aspect ratio). A screen is masked for one of them and opens or closes its masking for the other.
- Constant height: both formats share the full screen height and scope is wider. The side masking opens for scope. Most new auditoriums are built this way, because the widest format gets the biggest picture.
- Constant width: both formats use the full width and flat is taller. The top masking comes down for scope. You find it in older and narrower rooms.
The calculator fits the largest picture of each shape inside the maximum width and height you enter. It then measures the horizontal angle the scope picture fills from the front and back rows, and divides the scope width by the DCI scope frame (2,048 pixels across at 2K, 4,096 at 4K) to give the size of one pixel on the screen. Those frame sizes are the ones the ISDCF lists from the SMPTE standards: scope is 2048 × 858 at 2K and 4096 × 1716 at 4K, flat is 1998 × 1080 and 3996 × 2160.
The design rules it checks against
| Rule | Value | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Viewing angle from the farthest seat | 36° horizontal | THX certified screen placement |
| First row distance (eye to screen) | At least 0.6 × the maximum picture width; never under 0.5 × | UNIC, How to design a cinema auditorium |
| Vertical angle from the first row | 25° or less; 35° maximum to the top of the picture | UNIC handbook |
| Angle from off-centre seats to screen centre | Good up to 35°, acceptable to 45°, never more | UNIC handbook |
| Row spacing, standard seats | At least 1,200 mm back to back | UNIC handbook |
| Sightline clearance per row | 200 mm or more good; 150–200 mm acceptable; under 120 mm unacceptable | UNIC handbook |
THX: thx.com, "What is THX Certified Screen Placement?". UNIC: How to design a cinema auditorium, 2nd edition, by Rolv Gjestland (unic-cinemas.org). Both checked 29 October 2026. Your building code and fire officer decide row length, aisles and exits.
From screen size to the rest of the room
Screen width sets the rest of the room. It tells you how much light you need (try the screen brightness calculator and our projector buying guide). It also sets where the first row can go, and from there how many rows fit at 1,200 mm or more each. Draw those rows, the aisles and the wheelchair spaces in the seat plan builder. If you are converting to recliners, plan the rows again from the start: the UNIC handbook gives recliner depths of 900 to 1,400 mm upright and 1,800 mm or more fully reclined.
For what national seat counts look like, the average screen has 180 seats in France, 162 in Australia and 159 in Germany. Our movie theater counts by country has the figures and their sources.
Frequently asked questions
How big is a movie theater screen?
It depends on the room. The screen is sized to the wall and to the distance of the back row. THX recommends that the picture fill 36° of the view from the farthest seat. At 20 metres from the back row that means a picture about 13 metres wide. Premium large-format screens are bigger again.
What is the difference between a scope and a flat screen?
Scope pictures are 2.39 times as wide as they are tall, flat pictures 1.85 times. On a constant-height screen both use the full height and scope is about 29% wider. On a constant-width screen both use the full width and flat is taller.
How far should the front row be from a cinema screen?
The UNIC auditorium design handbook advises at least 0.6 times the maximum picture width, measured from the viewer's eye, and never less than 0.5 times. For a 12-metre scope screen that is at least 7.2 metres, and never under 6 metres.
What viewing angle should a cinema have?
THX recommends a 36° horizontal viewing angle from the farthest seat. Closer seats see more than that. The UNIC handbook limits the front row to about 80° of the scope picture.
How much space between rows of cinema seats?
The UNIC handbook asks for at least 1,200 mm back to back for standard seats, with extra space behind the last row. Recliners need much more: 900 to 1,400 mm of seat depth upright and 1,800 mm or more fully reclined. Your local building code sets the legal minimum.
