The surface itself — gain, perforation and masking, and increasingly whether you need a screen at all.
Screens are the least glamorous major purchase and one of the easiest to get wrong. Gain has to match the projector and the room; too much and the seats at the edges lose brightness. Perforation has to pass the sound from the speakers behind it without colouring it. And silver screens, needed for polarised 3D, are noticeably worse for 2D — a real trade-off in a house that mostly plays 2D.
Direct-view LED is the live question in this category. It removes the projector entirely and is spectacular, but it puts the sound somewhere other than behind the picture and the capital cost is in a different league.
