An LED cinema screen is not a better projection screen; it is the end of projection. The picture is generated by the display surface itself, which means absolute black where a pixel is off, brightness far beyond what a projector delivers to a screen, and no projection booth throw to design around.

The trade-offs are real and worth being clear about. Cinema sound has always lived behind a perforated screen, and an LED panel is solid — so the audio design has to move, usually to speakers above and beside the screen, which is an acoustic compromise some operators dislike. Capital cost is in a different league from a projector. And the installed base remains small relative to projection.

Samsung reached DCI compliance first and has installed Onyx across Asia, Europe and North America, with China and India among the earliest adopters. For most exhibitors this is a flagship-auditorium decision rather than an estate one.
