Strong/MDI manufactures the screen and the structure that holds it — which is a useful combination, because a screen specified without its frame and masking is only part of the job. Custom frames and motorised systems matter in venues where the picture has to change shape, or where the screen has to get out of the way for live performance.

Rear projection is the less common half of the business and the more interesting one: it turns up in specialty venues, museums, attractions and screening rooms where there is no room for a conventional throw or no tolerance for a projector in the audience's sightline.

The North American screen market is small enough that the same names recur, and Strong's screen manufacturing history runs back well before digital.
