What it is
DAS KINOFEST is not a trade event but an audience campaign run by the German cinema industry. On the chosen weekend, participating cinemas across Germany sell tickets to all available films for a flat €5. The 2026 edition ran on 12 and 13 September 2026, and the site's cinema finder listed several hundred participating venues, from multiplex chains to independents.
The website credits the project to a group of partners; the logos shown include German exhibitor and distributor bodies such as HDF Kino, AG Kino and AG Verleih, and the Zukunft Kino initiative.
What it means for an operator
The trade-off is simple: a heavily discounted weekend in exchange for national marketing, footfall and a chance to bring back lapsed audiences. Operators decide whether the volume, concessions spend and re-engagement outweigh the lower ticket yield. The organiser advises audiences to book in advance through each cinema's own booking system, so your online ticketing needs to cope with a spike, and the site lists each participating venue in its cinema finder.
