A wrapper, not a codec
The most common confusion about MXF is treating it as a video format. It is not. It is a container — a standardised way of wrapping essence and its metadata so that different systems can read it reliably.
Inside a DCP, what the MXF wraps is specific: picture is JPEG 2000, one frame at a time, and sound is uncompressed PCM. There are separate MXF files for picture and for sound, and the CPL is what says how they go together.
Which is why double-clicking one on a laptop does nothing useful. The container is readable; the contents are cinema-specific, high-bitrate and frequently encrypted, and nothing on a normal computer is set up to play them.

Can I open an MXF file?
Professional tools can inspect one, but an MXF from a DCP holds JPEG 2000 picture or uncompressed cinema audio and is often encrypted. It is not meant to be opened outside a cinema playback chain.
Why is MXF used instead of a normal video file?
Because it carries essence and metadata together in a standardised, streamable way that professional systems agree on. Consumer formats make assumptions cinema cannot accept.
How many MXF files are in a DCP?
At minimum one for picture and one for sound, often more where there are multiple reels or subtitle assets.
