Edda Kino

Edda Kino runs five halls and 944 seats in Haugesund on a normal week, at around 200,000 admissions a year. Once a year it becomes the principal venue for the Norwegian International Film Festival, and the building has to behave like a different business for the duration.

That dual identity is genuinely awkward for most cinema systems. Festival programming is not a release slate: strands, passes, industry accreditation, screenings that are not on general sale, and a schedule that changes late. Running it as a bolt-on to the regular programme usually means either the festival is badly served or the normal cinema listing gets polluted by it.

Edda also runs conference and event hire alongside film, which is the same problem in a smaller form: the room is bookable for things that are not screenings.
