Comscore's theatrical business absorbed Rentrak, which is why long-serving exhibitors still refer to Rentrak reporting. Cinemas report their grosses and admissions into it, and the aggregated result is what studios, distributors and the trade press use to discuss how a title is performing.

For an exhibitor this is a two-way arrangement rather than a purchase. You supply data and you get back the comparative picture: how your site performed against the market, how a title indexed in your region, what the competitive set did. That benchmark is the thing you cannot generate internally, and it is the difference between knowing your admissions fell and knowing whether everyone's did.

Reporting is usually automated out of the box office system, which is worth confirming when you change ticketing vendors — a reporting feed that silently breaks is discovered by a distributor, not by you.
